Smart homes don’t feel particularly futuristic anymore. Cameras let us check the front door from work. Baby monitors provide reassurance from another room. Smart speakers answer questions, video doorbells tell us who’s outside, and laptops move seamlessly between work calls, family conversations and everyday browsing.

Emily loved that convenience too.

Her laptop, home security cameras and connected devices made everyday life easier. She could check her home while travelling, join a meeting in seconds and manage several devices remotely. Everything felt connected—and, more importantly, under her control.

Until one evening, an unfamiliar account sent her a message claiming to have private images from inside her home.

Whether a message like that contains genuine stolen material or is simply an attempt at extortion, receiving it immediately changes the way you look at every camera around you. Which devices have access? Which applications have camera permission? Is the camera account protected with a unique password? Has its firmware been updated? Could malware on the computer be accessing the webcam?

That is the uncomfortable reality of webcam hacking and smart-device security in 2026. Cameras and microphones have become part of everyday digital life, but every connected device also needs to be treated as something capable of collecting sensitive information.

The good news is that you don’t have to disconnect your entire smart home. You need to understand where the risks come from—and build better protection around them.

What Is Webcam Hacking?

Webcam hacking, sometimes referred to as camfecting, generally describes unauthorized access to or control of a computer’s webcam. Depending on the attack, malicious software or compromised credentials may allow an attacker to access camera functionality, capture images or video, or interfere with other device features.

There isn’t one universal method hackers use.

A phishing email might convince someone to download malware. A malicious attachment could install spyware or a remote-access Trojan. An attacker might obtain reused account credentials from an unrelated breach and try them against a connected-camera account. An internet-connected camera could also contain an unpatched software or firmware vulnerability.

The same general privacy concern extends to microphones and IoT devices, although the technology and attack paths can differ.

This is why protecting a webcam is no longer simply about putting a cover over the camera lens. Physical covers can be useful, but modern webcam protection also means protecting accounts, software, permissions, microphones, networks and connected devices.

Why Webcam and Microphone Protection Matters

Think about where your laptop sits during an ordinary week.

Perhaps it is open in your bedroom in the morning, on your desk during confidential work conversations in the afternoon and sitting in the living room during the evening. Your microphone may hear conversations that were never intended to become digital information.

Now consider the connected cameras around a modern home. A security camera may show entrances and exits. A baby monitor can provide a view inside a bedroom. A smart doorbell can reveal when people are home—or when they aren’t.

That makes unauthorized access more than a technical inconvenience. It can become a serious privacy and data security issue.

The FBI has previously documented incidents in which criminals used stolen credentials to access smart devices with camera and voice capabilities. Its guidance recommends strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for internet-connected accounts and devices.

The lesson is simple: if a device can see, hear, store or transmit information from your private life, its security deserves attention.

Signs Your Webcam or Device May Need Attention

A camera indicator activating unexpectedly deserves investigation, particularly if you aren’t using an application that should have camera access. But don’t immediately assume every unexpected light means someone is spying on you. Legitimate applications, browser tabs, background processes and system features can sometimes activate camera or microphone functionality.

Instead, look at the broader picture.

Check whether unfamiliar applications have camera or microphone permissions. Look for software you don’t remember installing. Investigate unusual account-login notifications, unexpected changes to camera settings, unknown recordings or unexplained activity associated with a connected-device account.

A sudden change in network or device behaviour can also justify further investigation, although symptoms such as battery drain, slow performance or increased data usage have many legitimate causes and should not be treated as proof of hacking.

The important thing is to investigate unusual behaviour rather than ignore it.

How to Protect Your Webcam, Microphone and Smart Devices

1. Review Camera and Microphone Permissions

Start with a surprisingly simple question:

How many applications can access your camera right now?

You may be surprised.

Video-conferencing tools obviously need camera access. But an application you installed six months ago may still have permission even though you no longer use it. The same applies to microphone permissions.

Review these settings periodically and remove access from applications that no longer need it. The FBI has similarly advised consumers to understand the permissions granted to apps associated with connected devices and reject privileges that don’t make sense.

2. Use Unique Passwords for Connected Cameras

Reusing passwords can turn one compromised account into several compromised accounts.

Imagine using the same password for an old shopping account and your home-camera account. If credentials from the shopping service are exposed, criminals can potentially test those credentials against other services.

Use a strong, unique password for every important account—particularly connected-camera and smart-home accounts—and change manufacturer default credentials where applicable. Current FBI guidance for network cameras also recommends avoiding default, weak and reused passwords.

3. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication

Where your camera or smart-device provider supports it, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).

A stolen password is significantly less useful when another authentication factor is required to access the account. The FBI specifically recommends MFA for online accounts and internet-connected smart devices with camera and voice capabilities.

4. Keep Everything Updated

Your laptop isn’t the only device that needs security updates.

Webcams, routers, security cameras and other connected devices may receive firmware updates that address security vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates when appropriate and supported, and periodically check whether manufacturers still provide security support for older devices.

Recent FBI guidance concerning targeted web cameras and DVRs specifically recommends installing operating-system, software and firmware updates when manufacturers release them and considering removal of devices that are no longer supported.

5. Protect Against Malware and Spyware

Sometimes the camera isn’t the original target—the computer is.

Malware, spyware and remote-access tools can potentially provide attackers with capabilities beyond simple camera access. This makes real-time malware protection an important part of webcam security.
