You search for a pair of running shoes during lunch. Later that evening, an ad for those shoes appears while you’re reading the news. The next morning, another follows you onto a completely different website. Maybe you’ve experienced something even stranger: you research a holiday, insurance policy, new laptop, or health-related question, and suddenly the internet seems unusually interested in the same thing.

It can feel as though somebody is looking over your shoulder.

Usually, nobody literally is. What’s happening is more complicated—and largely invisible. As you browse the web, websites, analytics providers, advertising networks, and other services can collect different signals about your visits and interactions. Cookies can remember you. Your IP address can reveal information about your network and approximate location. Tracking technologies can record interactions, and your browser itself can reveal characteristics that may contribute to a digital fingerprint.

One click doesn’t necessarily reveal your identity. But enough signals collected over time can help create a surprisingly detailed picture of your online behavior.

That’s website tracking—and understanding it is becoming an increasingly important part of protecting your online privacy.

What Is Website Tracking?

Website tracking is the collection of information about how people interact with websites and, in some cases, their activity across different websites or applications.

Not all tracking is inherently bad.

A website might remember that you’re logged in, keep products in your shopping cart, remember your language preference, measure whether a page is working properly, or understand which articles visitors find useful. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission explains that cookies can support functions such as remembering user IDs, maintaining shopping carts, storing preferences, measuring activity, and customizing browsing experiences.

The privacy question becomes more complicated when tracking follows people beyond the website they intentionally visited.

Mozilla defines cross-site tracking broadly as collecting information about someone’s activity across multiple websites or applications and retaining, using, or sharing that information beyond the first party where it was collected.

In other words, there’s an important difference between a website remembering what you put in your basket and a broader advertising ecosystem trying to understand what you’ve been doing across the internet.

And cookies are only the beginning.

How Do Websites Track You Online?

The most familiar tracking technology is the cookie.

Cookies are small pieces of information stored by your browser. Some are genuinely useful. Without them, websites might forget that you’ve logged in or empty your shopping cart every time you navigate to another page.

Persistent cookies can last considerably longer. The FTC notes that some remain until they’re manually deleted or expire, potentially months or years after being placed on a device.

Then there are third-party cookies, traditionally associated with services other than the website you’re directly visiting. These have played a major role in cross-site advertising and measurement because the same third party can potentially encounter a browser across numerous websites.

The industry has spent years preparing for a web without them—but that transition has been anything but straightforward. In April 2025, Google announced that Chrome would maintain its existing approach of giving users a choice regarding third-party cookies rather than introducing the new standalone prompt it had previously considered.

That decision matters because Chrome’s enormous reach means the debate over cookies, advertising, privacy, and tracking is far from finished.

But even if every tracking cookie disappeared tomorrow, online tracking wouldn’t disappear with them.

Your Browser Can Become a Fingerprint

Imagine someone trying to identify you without asking your name.

Instead, they note your height, shoe size, accent, watch, clothing, and dozens of other small characteristics. None may identify you individually. Together, however, the combination becomes much more distinctive.

Browser fingerprinting works on a similar principle.

According to MDN, fingerprinting can combine characteristics such as browser version, timezone, preferred language, available audio or video codecs, installed fonts, browser settings, screen size, and resolution. JavaScript and other web technologies can expose enough characteristics to potentially distinguish one browser from many others.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Cover Your Tracks project demonstrates how detailed those signals can become. Its testing examines characteristics including screen resolution, timezone, system language, browser configuration, canvas and WebGL behavior, and whether privacy tools appear to be installed.

Mozilla calls fingerprinting a “pervasive and hidden tracking technique” and warns that it can potentially recognize users even when cookies are blocked or private browsing is being used.

That last part is important.

Deleting cookies doesn’t necessarily erase every trail.

Mozilla says fingerprinting can allow tracking for months even after browser storage is cleared or private browsing is used.

This is one reason privacy protection has become an arms race: as browsers restrict one tracking technique, parts of the tracking industry look for other signals.

What Does Your IP Address Reveal?

Every internet connection also involves an IP address.

Your IP address is necessary for internet communication, but it can reveal information about your connection and can often be associated with an approximate geographic area. It shouldn’t be treated as though it automatically reveals your exact home address, but it remains a useful network identifier.

That makes IP addresses relevant to advertising, analytics, security, fraud detection, content localization, and tracking.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) can change this part of the picture. When connected to a VPN, your traffic is routed through the VPN provider’s server, meaning destination websites generally see the VPN server’s public IP rather than your usual public-facing IP address.

But a VPN does not make you completely anonymous.

If you connect through a VPN and then sign into Google, Amazon, Facebook, or another account, you’ve still identified yourself to that service. Cookies, account activity, and browser characteristics can provide other signals too.

A VPN addresses one part of online privacy. It isn’t an invisibility cloak.

Why Are Companies So Interested in Your Browsing Activity?

Because attention has value.

Understanding what people search for, click, buy, abandon, read, watch, and return to can help businesses improve websites and services. It can also help advertisers decide which messages to show which audiences.

A person researching mortgage rates may be valuable to financial advertisers. Someone repeatedly reading car reviews may be considering a purchase. A user researching flights and hotels may soon book a holiday.

Individual actions become signals.

Signals become patterns.

And patterns can become profiles.

This doesn’t mean every company has a file containing your name followed by everything you’ve ever done online. Tracking ecosystems are far more complicated than that. Identifiers may be pseudonymous, datasets may be separated, and privacy laws and technical restrictions affect what organizations can collect and how they can use it.

But the broader principle remains: behavioral data has commercial value.

As the Electronic Frontier Foundation has observed in its research into online tracking, browsers can make requests to numerous third parties as a person navigates the web, creating opportunities for information to move beyond the website the person intentionally chose to visit.

Does Incognito Mode Stop Website Tracking?

This is another common privacy misunderstanding.

Private or incognito browsing is useful, but its purpose is often misunderstood.

It primarily reduces what remains on your own device after the private session ends—for example, browsing history and certain stored site information. It doesn’t automatically make you anonymous to every website, internet service, employer network, or online service you interact with.

And fingerprinting complicates the picture further.

Mozilla’s research specifically notes that browser fingerprinting can potentially recognize browsers even when users are in private browsing mode.

So if your goal is simply to keep a shared computer from remembering your browsing session, private browsing can help.

If your goal is to become invisible on the internet, it can’t deliver that.

How Can You Reduce Website Tracking?

The good news is that privacy doesn’t have to mean abandoning the modern web.

Start with your browser. Review its privacy settings and understand what it does with third-party cookies, cross-site tracking, and fingerprinting. Modern browsers increasingly provide built-in protections. Firefox, for example, has expanded fingerprinting defenses, while Chrome provides controls around third-party cookies and has continued developing tracking protections.

Then look at extensions carefully. A reputable ad blocker or tracker blocker can reduce requests to known advertising and tracking services, potentially creating a cleaner browsing experience while limiting some unnecessary tracking. But browser extensions themselves receive permissions, so installing dozens of unknown “privacy” extensions can create a different security problem.

A secure VPN can help mask your normal public IP address from destination websites and encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server. Again, that’s useful privacy protection, but it shouldn’t be confused with total anonymity.

Also pay attention to consent choices. Clicking “Accept All” has become almost automatic for many of us. Taking a few seconds to review optional advertising and analytics choices can reduce some data collection where meaningful controls are provided.

Finally, remember that privacy is broader than tracking technology. Review account permissions, limit unnecessary information sharing, remove extensions you no longer use, keep browsers updated, and think carefully before giving websites information they don’t genuinely need.

No single feature, however, can make someone invisible online.

For years, online privacy discussions revolved around one villain: the cookie.

The reality has always been bigger.

Cookies, browser fingerprints, IP addresses, account logins, advertising identifiers, analytics technologies, and information people voluntarily provide can all contribute different pieces to the online identity puzzle.

And the industry knows this.

Mozilla’s decision to expand fingerprinting protections in Firefox and Google’s continued work on Chrome tracking protections demonstrate how browser makers are responding to changing expectations around privacy.

The question is no longer simply whether websites collect data.

It’s increasingly:

How much do they collect? Why do they need it? Who else receives it? How long does it remain useful? And how much control does the person browsing actually have?

Those are healthier questions because online privacy isn’t about hiding everything you do.

It’s about having meaningful control over what you reveal.

Nor should we have to.

But we should understand that browsing isn’t always the private, one-to-one interaction it appears to be.

Behind a single page can sit cookies, analytics systems, advertising technologies, embedded third-party services, and other mechanisms processing different signals about your visit.

You clicked.

Something remembered.

Another service recognized a signal.

Over time, those signals may help create a profile.

That doesn’t mean you need to become paranoid about every website you visit. It means becoming more deliberate about your privacy: understand your browser settings, limit unnecessary tracking, use privacy tools where appropriate, and don’t assume that private browsing makes you invisible.

The modern web runs on information.

Some of that information is necessary to make websites work.

Some makes them better.

And some you may simply prefer to keep to yourself.

The goal isn’t to leave no digital footprint at all. It’s to have more say over who gets to follow it.
