Paragon Spyware Attacks WhatsApp: Protect Data from Threats

In a shocking revelation, WhatsApp has accused Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions of hacking scores of its users, including journalists and civil society members. After the attack, the messaging giant took action against the company, sending a cease-and-desist letter to Paragon.

WhatsApp officials confirmed that hackers attempted to breach around 90 users scattered in more than two dozen countries, many of them in Europe. Zero-click malware was used in the attack. This implies that the victims did not have to click on any malicious file for their devices to be compromised, a highly insidious way of hacking.

WhatsApp Takes Action Against Paragon

Speaking to Reuters, a WhatsApp representative revealed that the platform had disrupted the hacking attempt and referred affected users to the Canadian internet watchdog group Citizen Lab for further investigation. However, the official declined to disclose details on how the company determined Paragon was behind the attack.

“We will continue to protect people’s ability to communicate privately,” WhatsApp said in a statement.

The incident raises concerns about the growing threats posed by way of industrial spyware. Law enforcement businesses and industry partners were notified, though the official did not provide specifics. Meanwhile, the FBI has yet to comment on the matter.

Paragon’s Troubling Spyware Tactics

Spyware corporations like Paragon Solutions create sophisticated surveillance tools, which they claim are intended for government use to combat crime and terrorism. However, this equipment has regularly been found on the phones of journalists, activists, opposition politicians, and even 50 U.S. Officials, raising concerns over how such technology is being misused.

Cybersecurity expert and Citizen Lab researcher John Scott-Railton emphasized the broader implications of the attack, stating:
“The discovery of Paragon spyware targeting WhatsApp users is a reminder that mercenary spyware continues to proliferate and as it does, so we continue to see familiar patterns of problematic use.”

Paragon, which was acquired last month by Florida-based investment group AE Industrial Partners, has promoted itself as a responsible player in the spyware industry. The company claims to sell its products only to stable democratic governments and markets its tools as ethically based solutions to counter threats.

However, Natalia Krapiva, senior tech-legal counsel at the advocacy group Access Now, questioned these claims, stating:
“Paragon had the reputation of being a better spyware company, but WhatsApp’s recent revelations suggest otherwise. This is not just a question of some bad apples—these types of abuses (are) a feature of the commercial spyware industry.”
